Five Idiocyncrasies

Tuesday, 21 of August , 2007 @ 6:02 am

1.  Psych majors cannot read minds, but I think being exposed to psychological thought makes us adept observers.  That means, while we aren’t the absolute authorities on human behavior, we can make very good (and almost accurate) inferences on what you’re thinking based on how you act.  You see, humans are painfully predictable. For example, we can tell when you don’t mean what you say, or if you’re trying to say something indirectly (in other words, hinting).

And because of that, I can’t help thinking in psychological terms when I’m in a social situation.  I don’t know if I’m explaining it correctly, but when I notice a particular behavior from someone, I always myself why he/she does that.  Then I come up with theories to rationalize their behavior.

Of course, I keep my observations and conclusions to myself.

2.  In everything I do, I almost always have an ulterior motive.  Not all the time, but there are times when I want the things I do to benefit me in the process.  I guess that makes me selfish.  Oh well.

3.  I am a diet soda addict. Ask my friends.  There isn’t a day when I don’t drink a diet cola.  After drinking, I drink a lot of water to wash the cola taste down.  Yeah, I’m weird like that.

4.  I am very, very anal about time.  I hate it when people are late for meetings.  I hate waiting.  I hate postponing things (but I do procrastinate a lot. Like right now. Ha ha.) I myself am rarely ever late, and when I arrive late I usually have a really good reason.

5.  The surest way to piss me off (aside from being late) is to not reply to my text messages.

Tagging whoever :P

Name a funny habit you have

Funny habbit? I’m not sure. Like most people, I’m not really aware of my quirks.

The funniest thing I can think of is a habit I eventually stopped doing. Around this time last year, I was a compulsive heart-doodler. So long as I had a pen in my hand, I would doodle hearts everywhere. I wasn’t even aware about my obsessive doodling, nor was I conscious of the wrong signals a bunch of hearts along the margins of my notebook would send to the unassuming fellow. For instance, I only noticed that I had drawn so many hearts on an exam paper when it was returned to me with a note from my professor saying - “Marielle, why is your exam paper littered with hearts?” Ha ha. But I wasn’t in love or anything at that time. I just really liked the shape of hearts.

If you could instantly know how to play a musical instrument, which one would you pick?

Oh god, the violin. That’s one of my biggest frustrations. I played the piano for a long time, but I absolutely hated it. I’ve always liked the sound of string instruments as a kid, and the musicians who play them looked especially classy to me. I still like listening to the violin when I’m in the mood for classical music.

And the flute, too! The silver kind, not the plastic/bamboo recorder one. When I was a kid I wanted to take up the flute instead of piano, but alas, I noticed they don’t let you use the silver flute when you’re just starting out. I think beginners are taught with a recorder first, and you have to work your way up. But I wanted to skip all that kiddie crap and proceed to the fancy, cool kind of flute.

How long is your hair?

An inch below my chin. This is probably the longest it has been in about a year or so. I look horrible with long hair. Seriously. So I always keep it short. Besides, it suits my personality better. It’s so easy to maintain that when I wake up in the morning, all I have to do is run my fingers through my hair and everything falls in its place. No combing/brushing required! And eventually, that point when my hair will need the aid of a comb to look nice means it’s too long, I need to have it cut. Ha ha. I love changing my hairstyles every so often, and I tend to do so whenever I’m stressed. Hair therapy, I call it.

When was the last time you forgave someone, and who was it?

If I remember right, one of my closest friends made an awful remark that made me angry. They say I have a terrible temper that no one should ever trigger, but I think that only applies when people I don’t really know piss me off. But when it comes to my friends, I can never stay mad at them for long. I just hope no one abuses that.

Dessert
What is your favorite kitchen appliance?

NON-STICK PANS FOR THE WIN!

And sharp knives, too.

The microwave isn’t all that bad, either.

Oh, and the coffee press!

I love kitchen appliances.

Name something you think is “the best.”

I think the PlayStation RPG Suikoden II is the best out of the Suikoden series. Actually, I think it’s the best RPG ever, but that doesn’t really mean much because I haven’t played a whole lot of RPGs.

I’m a very big fan of the Suikoden series. I’ve played all five games in the franchise (except for Suikoden Tactics which is a spin-off of Suikoden IV, my least favorite), but Suikoden II is still my favorite out of them. Suikoden V is also a brilliant game and comes at a very very close second, then Suikoden III, then the original game. I really hated Suikoden IV. I don’t even remember the plot.

Suikoden II came out in the first PlayStation console in 2000. It’s one of the first RPGs I’ve ever played, so that’s probably one of the reasons why I love this game. I think I’ve re-played it 5 times already. Okay, so Suikoden (in general) is a very easy game to play. If you’re a hardcore gamer, you will be disappointed at how incredibly easy it is to breeze through the game. But the awesome story really makes up for that. I know it’s ridiculous to say I was touched by a video game, but it’s true! If only the novelization of Suikoden II had an English translation, I would order it from Amazon and read and re-read it forever. I just love the twists of the plot, and how un-cliche and unconventional the characters are. One of the best stories I’ve ever heard. I never get tired of it. I was affected by this game big time, ha ha! Suikoden V was just as captivating and touching, but I guess Suikoden II will always have sentimental value.

What I am sure of, though, is the Suikoden series has THE best original soundtrack in a video game. Hands down. Nobuo Uematsu doesn’t stand a change.

If you’ve never heard of Suikoden II, dig out your old dusty PlayStation and play this game, damn it! I promise, if you’re looking for an RPG with a superb story, you can’t go wrong with this one.

On a scale of 1 to 10 (with 10 highest), how stressed are you today?

4? Ha ha. Summer classes has ended, so I’m not that busy. The only mildly stressing thing I did today was making logos and publicity materials for Psychedelics.

Salad
What kind of cleanser do you use to wash your face?

Neutrogena Facial Cleanser. I use St. Ives’ Apricot Scrub to exfoliate once a week.

Tonight is a blue moon! What is something that you believe only happens “once in a blue moon.”

I’m a homebody. I only go out once in a blue moon. By going out, I mean parties, movies or just hanging out somewhere. I don’t know why, but seeing my friends in school is enough socialization for me.

Dessert
When was the last time it rained where you live?

Rainy season is upon the Philippines again! Shit. But I don’t think it rained today! Yay! It rained yesterday when I was in school. Argh. I despise the rainy season. Not only is it dangerous, I can’t stand walking around at the risk of getting wet by the rain or flood. I especially cannot stand the smell that emanates from the ground when it rains - that musky combination of soil, dirt, and rust. Yuck.

Tagged by Tiffany - 6 Weird Things

Tuesday, 29 of May , 2007 @ 10:15 am

Each player of this game starts with 6 weird things about you. People who get tagged need to write a blog of their own 6 weird things as well as state the rule clearly. In the end, you need to choose 6 people to be tagged and list their names. Don’t forget to leave a comment that says you are tagged in their comments and tell them to read your blog.

I don’t tag people because they never do the meme. Ha ha.

  1. I love cats. So when I see a stray cat around school, I “talk” to it as if it can understand human language. I say “come here, kitty!” Sometimes I even by them lunch. No shit.
  2. Related to #1, I like taking pictures of cute stray cats. I have an entire folder of them in my cellphone.
  3. I like walking around when I brush my teeth. In fact, I can’t stand still when I brush my teeth. I never thought it was weird until my sister pointed it out to me.
  4. I grit my teeth when I sleep. I don’t know what it sounds like, but my mom and sister said it sounds like fingernails running down a chalkboard. My mom would even wake me up in the middle of the night when I do it; she was afraid my teeth would fall off.
  5. I don’t find it rude when people eat before everyone else’s meal is served. Maybe they’re starving already. Nor do I think sitting at the back of a car when no one is sitting in the passenger’s seat is like treating the driver like a chauffeur. That’s dumb. When I was a kid my mom would always let us sit at the back of the car where it’s much safer. Also, being the second kid, my sister would always take the passenger seat so I’m used to sitting at the back.
  6. My irrational fears include: airplanes, earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, landslides, and stubbing my toe and breaking a nail. Yes, I really do agonize about these useless things.

Friday’s Feast #1

Friday, 25 of May , 2007 @ 11:04 am

Name a sound you like to hear.

The sound of our Siamese cat’s meow. It’s really high-pitched, sing-song-y and sweet. Siamese cats are very vocal animals so our cat meows a lot, and I mean a lot. Usually when he sleeps in my room, he wakes me up by meowing incessantly so I could open the door for him. He also does this funny bird-like chirping sound, kind of like a half-purr, half-meow. Silly cat.

Soup
What is your favorite kind of cheese?

Edam cheese A.K.A queso de bola for the win! I like putting a slice of that in whole wheat bread and pop it in the sandwich maker. It becomes all grilled, gooey and sticky. Awesome. I also like Parmesan cheese in my pasta, and Swiss cheese, especially when it’s fondue. I love cheese! Cheese platters in swanky buffets are the best.

Salad
Do you sleep late on Saturday mornings? Why or why not?

No, partly because my body clock doesn’t permit me to sleep beyond 6:30 AM. I’m a morning person, anyway. I don’t really like sleeping until 10 AM or noon because I feel like I’ve wasted my entire day by then. Lately I haven’t been a fan of sleeping since you cannot be productive in your sleep. And I like productivity.

Main Course
When was the last time you forgot something? What was it, and how long did it take to remember it?

Someone texted me a while ago, but I haven’t replied yet because I was at a dinner. So thanks to this meme I remembered it, haha. I will send my reply later.

Dessert
Fill in the blank: I notice ____________ when _____________.

I notice if a guy wants to date or hook up when they ask me where I usually eat lunch. Food is the world’s oldest, and most overused pick-up tactic.

Marielli

MeMarielle is a 20-year-old Psychology student at the University of the Philippines, Diliman. She likes to sing, eat, shop and stay online for hours on end. She constantly tries to keep her personal life in check, so this blog of hers probably doesn't help. (Who is this Marielli person?)
