My Goals After College
Sunday, 20 of May , 2007 @ 8:53 am
All that idle time this summer served me well after all - I actually figured out what I really want to do after college. In fact, it’s all I ever think about these days. I’ve been thinking about this so much that I’m blogging about it instead of studying for my Chemistry exam, which is probably what I should prioritize at the moment if I really want these goals.
I thought up of five options. Of course I can only realize one of them.
Here are my plans, in order of what I really, really want:
- Get a postgraduate diploma in Hotel Management or any Hospitality-related course in Switzerland.
- Get a postgraduate diploma or masters degree in Industrial/Organizational (Occupational) Psychology in New Zealand, specifically at the University of Auckland.
- Set up my own restaurant/burger joint somewhere in UP (fo’ realz!)
- Work at the Human Resources Department of a corporation.
- Be a lawyer.
But… Here are my plans, ranked according to feasibility (my chances of actually accomplishing them):
- Work at the Human Resources Department of a corporation.
- Be a lawyer
- Get a postgraduate diploma or masters degree in Industrial/Organizational (Occupational) Psychology in New Zealand, specifically at the University of Auckland.
- Get a postgraduate diploma in Hotel Management or any Hospitality-related course in Switzerland.
- Set up my own restaurant/burger joint somewhere in UP
Get a postgraduate diploma in Hotel Management or any Hospitality-related course in Switzerland. My sudden interest in cooking and a weekend stay at The Diamond Hotel made me realize a job at the hotel and restaurant industry might just be the life for me. I’ve always been fascinated by hotels and of course, I love food. But what I love more than both of these is art, and hotels and food are art forms in their own right. To be surrounded by that for the rest of my life is something I desperately want more than to be a corporate drone in a gray cubicle.
My dad says that if I want a good position in the hotel industry, I must have a degree from one of the top Hospitality schools in Europe, especially in Switzerland. Luckily, most of the schools there offer postgrad degrees specifically for those who want to shift careers to the Hospitality industry.
My biggest hurdle here, of course, is the money. I need about 48, 000 Swiss francs for two years of study, boarding and a laptop (they have strict rules about laptops for some reason). I won’t convert that into Philippine Pesos anymore. It’s not that impossible, but it’s highly improbable. I could easily get my degree in the Philippines. In fact, I could get a degree from Les Roches or Vatel without having to go abroad. I do not know if I will learn just as much, but for personal growth reasons I would rather take it elsewhere.
As of now, this is what I really want. I’ll do anything.
Work at the Human Resources Department of a corporation and be that corporate robot I was talking about earlier. This is where most Psychology graduates end up in if they’re not taking Law or Medicine. As for me, I don’t mind. I find Industrial and Organizational (I/O) Psychology interesting, anyway. Which brings me to my other goal…
Get a postgraduate diploma or masters degree in Industrial/Organizational (Occupational) Psychology in New Zealand, specifically at the University of Auckland. Why New Zealand? I’m not sure. It looks like a beautiful country to stay in. I also heard that University of Auckland is the best in the country. And like I said, I/O Psychology is my favorite sub-field of Psych. So if the Switzerland thing doesn’t work out, I would still want to pursue my studies in New Zealand or somewhere else abroad. I computed the tuition. It will cost just as much, except that the standards of living in Switzerland are way higher. So I’ll probably still need more money if I go to Switzerland.
Set up my own restaurant/burger joint somewhere in UP This crazy idea came about when my friends and I ate at a really awesome burger joint in Baguio. Since there wasn’t anything like it in Manila, we joked that we would set up our own. We even talked about the menu and the design of the restaurant. I didn’t think much of it until a few days ago when I bought a copy of Entrepreneur Magazine. Their cover story is about people in the food and restaurant industry. Then, I started seriously considering it. Plus, I was inspired by the success of the new kiosk at CASAA (the one with inverted parasols!), the nearest canteen in the Psych building. So I thought, perhaps it would be nice to set up a restaurant in UP, since I know the market well.
I would love to pursue this if my study abroad plans don’t happen. I don’t care if I have zero knowledge in entrepreneurship, that can be learned. So if there are any interested business partners for this venture, you know where to find me.
Be a lawyer even if I don’t really want to. Most of my friends are braving the medicine world for 5 years after college, so I thought I might as well do the same - except that I will never take Medicine. But yeah, I don’t really like Law, either. I can’t argue for the life of me. So if ALL ELSE FAILS, I will take Law and be a corporate lawyer. It doesn’t hurt that the pay is good. Maybe I can convince myself to like it eventually?
Bottom line: I’ve never been so ambitious in my entire life, but it feels good to have goals. I just hope I can make it work. I’d be lost if I don’t.

I can’t argue for the life of me.
I disagree.
I think that if the opponents pisses you enough, war will definitely be made
MARIELLI: That’s because I will have hurled at him the nearest object within reach. HAHA
Seriously

Rakenrol sa mga minimithiing plano.
Tsaka ko na lang nalaman na wala pa pala akong plano o gustong gawin sa buhay ko bukod sa makapagsulat ng libro at tumugtog muli sa banda.
Goodluck out there. =)
MARIELLI: Salamat! Ikaw rin, good luck sa iyo. Pareho ata kayo ng Ate ko ng pangarap, magsulat ng libro and tumugtog sa banda. HAHAH

Enderun Colleges did a career talk of some sort in our school recently. And I think they’re connected to Les Roches. They have a very very nice campus (based from the AVP they showed us
). And their very nice campus made me want to study there though it’s pricey.
MARIELLI: I know about Enderun. A friend of mine is going to study there, on scholarship. Yes, they have a tie up with Les Roches, and their tuition costs just as much. So like I said, I’d take it in Les Roches na lang. :O Unless they have some short courses or something. I’ll check that out, too.

Wow, those are some great plans. They all sound like very realistic, reasonable plans and goals. I completely understand about the whole money situation. I was never able to complete my college education because I could not afford it. I did apply for loans and grants and was denied for both. Each time I applied. So I was only able to attend a year and a half of college. I miss it. One piece of advice. Don’t feel bad if your goals or plans don’t pan out. People change and over time you may decide you want to do other things. I’ve changed my mind many times over the years. Just make sure you apply yourself to whatever you decide to do and you’ll succeed.
MARIELLI: Hey! I get what you mean about people changing because I’m very fickle. Haha. Last month I really wanted that New Zealand thing, now I want the Hotel Management more. Ha ha. But I’m glad I have people who remind me that about what success doesn’t necessarily lie on what degree I get and where. Thank you for your advice

I think it’s Bo Sanchez who said that the first step in making our dreams come true is to write them down. So you’re done with step one!
It’s good that you have this because at least you have an idea of what you want to be. There’s nothing wrong with dreaming big — who knows, maybe you could get some kind of scholarship for that Switzerland dream. Anything’s possible.
If not, I know that as we mature, our dreams mature too, and we still dream of things along the same line, although a bit different.
God bless with all your dreams (and mine). We’ll get to where we want to, I’m sure.
*cheers*
MARIELLI: Thanks! The thing is, I’m not really a dreamer. But when I do have dreams I become hell-bent on achieving them. It’s what I really want at the moment and I hope it will stay that way.
