Novelty

People are like Google - we all like fresh content.

Ha, weak analogy, I know. Blame my mom, she was the one who told me that fun fact.

But seriously. It’s human nature to be fascinated by new things. We like things better when they’re fresh off their packaging, all sparkle-y and shiny.

But when the novelty is gone, we lose interest. Then we start taking the old things for granted. Because once the dust settles, we tire of the same old things.

And the same old people.

When we see and interact with the same people on a daily basis, we build familiarity. And after a while, we start to take them for granted, because we know they will always be there.

So we forget that enthusiastic “hello”, because we’ve been greeting the same old people everyday.

And we also forget to say “good bye”, because we’ve seen the same old back leaving through the same old door everyday.

And all we ever give them is a simple nod with a look that says “Oh, it’s you again.”

I hate it when this happens to me, so much that I find myself doing it to others, too. Just to see if they feel what it’s like to lose novelty.

A hello and a good bye. These are the small things I miss about how things were in the beginning.

I couldn’t agree more. I hate how everything seems so happy and grand when it all starts, and then turns bland as time passes. It really happens, it’s always been like that. *sigh*
