The Good Earth

Today, I decided to blow my allowance on a book from the tiangge (bazaar) along AS Walk. For those who don’t know yet, there are stalls along AS Walk selling really good books - some second-hand, some brand new, some are very difficult to find in a bookstore - for a fraction (and I do mean a fraction) of the price. This isn’t something I normally do because I’m not an avid reader. That’s my sister’s thing. Because of dyslexia, I had a hard time reading when I was growing up. Even up to this day, I still have dyslexic tendencies (like how I just typed in “tencendies”), which makes reading for long periods of time difficult.

I ended up buying Pearl S. Buck’s The Good Earth for Php 100, thinking it was the English translation of the Chinese novel that Suikoden (my favorite RPG) is based on. Turns out it isn’t (All Men are Brothers is the title, also by Pearl S. Buck). But I quite like The Good Earth anyway since it’s in the genre I particularly enjoy. When I do manage to get my letters in the right order, most of the books I find engaging are non-fiction and historical novels, set in some period in the past. I get kind of bored with books set in present time.

Apparently, high school sophomores in my high school are required to read The Good Earth for English class. Ha ha, we never had that in my other high school. My friend said she didn’t like the book, though. She said it was “all about concubines”. Tsk, spoiler.

It would be nice if you could recommend a nice historical/ non-fiction novel for me to read :o)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LEI! :o)

I blew my allowance on books too. :) I bought two hardcover books by Stephenie Meyer for $30. My mom was angry, but it was my money so it didn’t really matter. My friend has dyslexia and I feel so sorry for her. When the teacher asks her to read, she takes such a long time. :( The Good Earth sounds like an odd book, haha. Concubines. O_O

MARIELLI: $30? Sounds like something my sister would do! :o) The book is set in China at the turn of the 20th century, hence the concubines. :P I read it during my boring Chemistry class.

I use to do that a lot. I usually go to the library and pick up my books… my regular collection is huge. My youngest sister buys books and anime, like $300 worth a month… after all the money she earns, and she only splurges on that… I still wonder how her bank account is still so nice. lol.

Hmm… something with history and be non-fiction… well, truthfully, I enjoy a lot of the Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles. The characters come from different centuries and tell their own story. It is fascinating on the work done to detail on specific time periods.

I usually am a science fiction/ fantasy type person.

My mother always says that books are my investments. :)

A few books come to mind, but then when I try to remember the titles, I…forget. Boo me. And I don’t think you’re interested in the history of some former CPP-NPA members anyway, so…

Adeline Yen Mah’s a very engaging author. She’s written a couple of autobiographies of her life in China. I can’t remember how many times I cried while reading her novels, haha. Such a crybaby.
